Treatment indications

The Sulphurous Spa at Ostrožská Nová Ves offers treatment for:

  • diseases of locomotive organs, mainly the large, but also the small joints
  • diseases of vertebral joints, and
  • skin diseases

The main treatment procedure consists in sulphurous baths. The spa´s own mineral water is used, obtained from a number of wells behind the main spa building. The natural mineral water is captured in a depth of about 50 meters. The capacity of each well is some 40 liters per minute. It is cold, colourless, clear mineral water with an intensive smell of hydrogen sulphide. The analyses have revealed that the water is rich in various cations. A total of 18 cations were examined, with calcium, sodium, magnesium, potassium and iron accounting for the largest portion. As concerns anions, the water almost exclusively contains hydrogen carbonates and sulphates, which are found in extremely large quantities in one of the wells (almost 14mg per litre). Undissociated components include mainly silicic acid.

Locomotory system diseases

They include mainly rheumatic joint diseases called arthritides. Typically, a rheumatic joint disease develops after streptococcal infection. The effects of the streptococcal toxin in the body result in a specific reaction in the joint ligament. Tearing pain appears, restricted to individual joints. As a rule, the disease moves from one joint to another, affecting primarily the knee, leg and shoulder joints. Finally, the disease usually changes into a chronic stage.

The spa specialises in the treatment of chronic arthritis of basically all joints. In addition to the painful tissue-type form, which still allow the patients to move the affected joints slowly, ankylotic forms are also treated, when the joints are rigid, not allowing any movement, but often painless. The therapy offered by the spa also includes treatment for extra-articular rheumatism and painful syndromes of ligament and skeletal muscles, as well as joint diseases caused by psoriasis and other infections and harmful substances.

Another large group of diseases treated at the spa is arthroses. As opposed to arthritides, no inflammation is associated to these diseases. They are the result of the wear of the locomotory and the support systems of the body, either related to age or excessive stress on the joints due to overweight. Arthroses may also be the result of hard work, work with vibrating tools, and excessive sport exercises.

The Sulphurous Spa at Ostrožská Nová Ves also offers treatment for arthroses, including, but not limited to, arthroses of hip and knee joints, for which the patients are receiving systematic treatment, and arthroses of small hand and foot joints. Treatment indications also include excessive stress on joints due to overweight, hard work, sport exercises or vibrations, as referred to above.

Finally, the indication for the treatment in the local spa also includes diseases of vertebral joints.

Skin diseases

One large group of diseases treated in the Sulphurous Spa at Ostrožská Nová Ves includes various skin diseases, mainly psoriasis. It is a chronic disease which typically develops between 15 and 30 years of age. In early stages, slightly red raised stains are found on the skin, having the size of a pin head. The focus is covered by silvery-white plaques. It affects mainly the elbows and knees or the back, sometimes even the whole body. It may also affect head skin covered with hair and nails. It is undoubtedly a hereditary condition. The treatment focuses on both simple and generalised psoriasis, including special forms affecting the joints.

Another large group of skin diseases includes various forms of acne. Acne is an inflammation of sebaceous glands on the face, the chest, the shoulders and the back of adolescents. Typically, it is resolved during puberty. More serious conditions must be treated. Excellent effects have been achieved with sulphur-containing preparations used to treat large affected skin areas and excessive purulence leading to scars.
